Energy without intention is always a difficult thing, and the frustration of recent months (especially highlighted around the last week of August) will escalate this month as Mars goes retrograde. There’s a sense we’ll be revisiting old wounds or retracing our steps despite the fact all anyone wants to do is get on with things and look forward to something brighter.

I can’t lie, the mood is slow. It’s frustrating. It’s like turning off a highway only to find you’ve taken the wrong exit and discovering a “no through road” sign, or rushing when you’re late for work and hitting a huge traffic jam. September feels kind of like being in a gridlock.

Rather than trying to push sh*t up hill, take the glacial (or no) progress as a cue to slow down. Like all retrogrades, this is a time for reflection, reassessment and review, so rather than spinning your wheels trying to force things to happen, cut yourself (and those around you) a bit of slack. It’s the exact reason we decided to launch our 30 days of single tasking challenge – September is the perfect time to focus on doing just one thing with intention.

On the bright side, I’m looking forward to the full moon on 2 September, and the new moon on the 17 September. I’ll be hosting a free virtual circle on 2 September to work with the energy – you can find the details here. I’m also offering more detailed weekly video updates on my IGTV – you can find me here.

I always suggest reading your rising sign instead of your sun sign for the most accurate horoscope – have a read of this article to learn why.

Wishing you a restorative, insightful month

Emma xx

+ ARIES AND ARIES RISING

September kicks off with plenty of feels thanks to a juicy full moon in Pisces on the 2nd. This one is pulling focus on how you balance the day-to-day grind with your internal world. It’s a brilliant time to prioritise stillness and self-care.

The next week Mars – your ruling planet – will go retrograde for a couple of months. This might feel especially significant for your sign, as it marks a profound time for reflection. Reassessing your relationship to anger and assertion will be especially powerful over this two month period (until 15 November). It’s a great time to slow down and take stock of the way you project yourself into the world, but on the surface, you may find it manifests as an overall feeling of low energy. Go with the gentler pace rather than trying to struggle through and you could be in for some major breakthroughs.

+ TAURUS AND TAURUS RISING

This year has been a bit of a litmus test for friendships, with illness, financial hardship and violence heightening our need for connection and community. The full moon in Pisces (2 September) is the perfect excuse to reach out to someone you’ve been meaning to check in on, or quietly step back from someone who leaves you feeling totally tapped out.

From the 9 September onwards, Mars will be retrograde in Aries (until 15 November), emphasising the need for solitude and rest for the next eight weeks. That might sound ridiculous in the broader context of 2020 (you may feel like you’ve had nothing BUT solitude), but this is an invitation to be intentional with your quiet time. Schedule leave, meditate, take a social media sabbatical, switch off; whatever brings you a sense of calmness, do more of that. The last 10 days of the month could feel especially intense unless you consciously create space to be still so don’t fight the flow, take it easy and be kind to yourself. .

+ GEMINI AND GEMINI RISING

The month kicks off with a dramatic start with a full moon in Pisces on 2 September. The emotional tax of working from home and general grind of isolation may peak around this moon and leave you feeling extra sensitive. Don’t fight the feels, just let the waves of emotion move through you. A big cry, a hot bath, call a friend or all of the above could help process the intensity of the past six months.

Overall energy levels may feel a little wobbly from 9 September onwards when Mars goes retrograde (until 15 November), marking the beginning of two-month period where life might feel like it’s operating at half speed. Finances could be a source of irritation later in the month, forcing you to revisit an issue that arose in August. As a sign that likes momentum, the slowness of this period could feel especially frustrating. Your mission is to move more slowly. Give yourself permission to stop. If friends seem distant remind yourself it’s not personal – it’s just a low-key time.

+ CANCER AND CANCER RISING

What do you care about? What really matters to you? How do your words reflect your values? It’s serious stuff, and it’s exactly the kind of ideas ripe for contemplation when the full moon in Pisces kicks off September (2 September) with a bang. A friend or colleague may play a pivotal role in showing you a different way of seeing things, triggering an a-ha moment around these big questions.

Mars retrograde in Aries begins a week later (9 September), forcing an overall sense of slowness. This is the perfect time to think about your relationship to productivity, ego and assertiveness – especially in the context of your work. Physically, you could feel a little sluggish. Now’s not the time to soldier on. Wind back work where you can and use the next couple of months for soul-searching rather than striving. The lack of progress could be a source of tension in your relationship, especially after 22 September when Libra season begins. Tread gently with your partner and remember, delays are a speedbump not a failure.

+ LEO AND LEO RISING

With the fun of Leo season behind you, there’s a bit of a “back to school” vibe about September. Money and finances will be on your mind the first few weeks, with the full moon on 2 potentially bringing some fresh perspective – maybe even a surprising revelation to light around how you make, spend and save cash.

With Mars retrograde from 9 September, your energy levels could take a hit until mid November (15th). The trick is to cut yourself some slack and use the time to reflect on what really matters to you. Your beliefs and spiritual life are calling for your attention, so take a minute to consider whether what you’re doing – especially in your day to day routine – aligns with the values your hold dear. If the answer is no, this two month period is the perfect opportunity to dream about how to bring your reality into alignment with your personal philosophy.

+ VIRGO AND VIRGO RISING

You may be used to getting on with the job during Virgo season, but this month your challenge is to be to be selective about what you take on. Use that excellent editing skill to be considerate and intentional about the opportunities you commit. The full moon at the start of the month (2 September) could trigger an unexpected chain of events that make you see your relationship and/or any business partnership in a different light.

From the second week onwards, there’s an overall sense of slowness. With Mars retrograde (beginning 9 September), you’ll probably feel a bit less motivated – and that’s ok. Use it as an opportunity to refine your goals– especially anything related to shared assets (real estate, money, business interests). Use any breakthroughs from the full moon to inform new goals around shared cash and property. The last week of the month could feel especially tense with frustrations from last month (24–28 August) resurfacing and demanding further discussion.

+ LIBRA AND LIBRA RISING

September starts with a swell of epic energy when the full moon in Pisces shines a light on how well (or not-so-well) you balance the juggle of daily life with your internal world. If you’re feeling torn between a desire for solitude and the urgency of less ethereal matters like… what’s for dinner, that tension will reach boiling point with this lunation. Full moons are always about balance, so reflect on practical ways to find a compromise between the opposing areas of your life.

After a big start to the month, things slow right down when Mars turns retrograde from around 9 September. This particular retrograde (until 15 November) invites you to reflect on your relationship. The vibe could range from apathy through to frustration or even major irritation. Resist the urge to make any sudden movements, and instead allow yourself this time to notice what feelings are coming up. Investigating the root cause of your triggers could offer major pay-offs, the challenge will be whether you can be patient and sit with the discomfort and see what lies beneath.

+ SCORPIO AND SCORPIO RISING

It’s been a revealing year for friendships with enforced isolation bringing some to the fore, while others fall by the wayside. Friends will be on your mind early in the month when a full moon in Pisces on 2nd September shines a light on what’s working and what’s not. With Uranus in the mix, you may find some unexpected inspiration to reconnect – or disconnect – from someone in your social scene.

Mars , your ruling planet, stations to go retrograde the next week (9 September) bringing a sense of slowness to your everyday routine. You might struggle to find the energy to tackle your usual rituals – exercise, work, walking the dog, whatever auto-pilot things you do every day. Take this as an opportunity to slow down and go within. The energy is perfect to reflect on your relationship to all things martial in your life (confidence, assertiveness, anger) and what role they play in your everyday routine.

+ SAGITTARIUS AND SAGITTARIUS RISING

Work/life balance will be a hot topic early in September as a full moon in Pisces on the 2nd of September shines a light on how you’re managing the juggle, 2020 style. A bit of where-did-that-come from electricity courtesy of Uranus could offer a fresh spin on how to balance things more effectively, or it could introduce an unexpected consideration or commitment into your daily schedule (think: your partner arriving home with a rescue dog).

The following week, one of the biggest astro events left on this year’s calendar, Mars retrograde will kick off on 9 September (until 15 November). The substantial affect will be feeling a bit blah or wobbly. If you do creative work you might fell less inspired or find yourself second-guessing yourself. If you’ve got kids, they might seem a bit out of sorts. Your overall desire to just kick up your heels and have fun – something you’re usually excellent at – might feel a bit lack lustre. Don’t panic, this is just a momentary blip in energy levels. Use the time to take a break, rest and restore before the craziness of the end of year begins.

+ CAPRICORN AND CAPRICORN RISING

The past couple of years have been a time of huge growing pains and major transformation for you and your relationship, but this month it feels like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. The full moon in Pisces on 2nd September will be illuminating – bringing fresh insight and a burst of creative inspiration to the way you learn and communicate. Stay open to downloads around study, teaching, spirituality and travel that could come to you out of the blue.

When Mars stations to go retrograde the following week (9 September), it marks the beginning of one of the final big transits (ending 15 November) you’ll have to weather this year. It’s definitely not nothing, but it is one of the last ones that will feel really intense for you. Energy-wise you might feel a major case of the blahs but dig a little deeper and you’ll find beneath the frustration, exhaustion or irritation there’s something else calling for your attention. Your relationship to anger, your ability to assert yourself and your self-confidence will be tested. It’s not a problem, rather an opportunity to see what needs healing and consideration – especially in the realm of home and family. Work with the energy by allowing yourself space, time and as much solitude for quiet reflection.

+ AQUARIUS AND AQUARIUS RISING

Cash – how you make it, how you spend it and how you share it – will be on your mind for the first few weeks of the month while the sun is in Virgo (until September 23). The full moon on 2nd will bring to light how or where you need to reset and rebalance around financial matters, with something home or family related bringing an unexpected consideration (or complication) to the state of play.

The following week on 9 September Mars stations to go retrograde where it will remain for the following two months (until 15 November). You might find you’re suddenly feeling a little less motivated or inspired – especially in the realm of communications and writing. When any planet goes retrograde it’s a time to review and reflect rather than make rash decisions. Give yourself a little space to think about how you express yourself. How do you want to use your energy more wisely? What causes do you want to support more vocally? Thinking about the way you use your voice is the perfect way to work with this slower time.

+ PISCES AND PISCES RISING

September begins with plenty of emotion thanks to a powerful full moon in your home sign on 2nd September. This lunation casts a shimmering light over your own needs, and your partner’s (if you’re in a relationship). Full moons are always a time of heightened emotion, and in Pisces, that sensitivity is intensified. Dropping an unexpected bombshell or out-of-character conversation could trigger drama so be extra intentional with your words.

The rest of the month – and the following months (until 15 November) is dominated by Mars retrograde. Physically you may feel a little tired or less motivated than usual. It’s a cosmic cue to take things more slowly and allow yourself time to regroup, especially around your goals, habits and relationship with money. There could be some anxiety or irritation caused by cash-related scenarios as you’re forced to revisit discussions or issues from late July and August. It may feel frustrating – especially in the last week of the month – but should help strengthen your resolve around your creativity and connection to community.
