It takes a lot for me to get excited about a cleanser. It is, after all, essentially just like Jif for your face (except without the hardcore chemicals). But when Biologi’s new Bc Refresh Cleanser came across our desks, not only did I take notice… I felt a little giddy. Because this was the first time I’d ever seen a cleanser with only two ingredients. TWO. And, as it turns out, I wasn’t the only ones who’d never seen this – it was a world first.

SO, WHAT ARE THESE TWO MAGICAL INGREDIENTS?

Well, to get technical for a second, it really only has one ingredient, and the second one listed on the pack (sodium benzoate at 0.2%) is actually a preservative. The real magic, lies in the single active ingredient: Soapberry extract. Just like all of Biologi’s products, it’s used undiluted and is 100 per cent active, meaning it will affect (and improve) the function of the skin – so it’s not just there to make your face clean. As well as cleansing it brightens, balances, hydrates and contains anti-inflammatory actives (called triterpene glycosides) and the antioxidant phenolic acids that reduce redness and protect the skin against environmental aggressors.

DOES IT WORK?

It sounds too good to be true, but it isn’t. As someone who’s tested it every night for the last week I can attest that it really is a delight. Although it is a foaming cleanser, it doesn’t use any synthetics or surfectants (the things that make products ‘bubble’ and ‘lather’), so the foam is only slight (thanks to Soapberry’s naturally occuring saponins). The feel is silky, and definitely does not leave your face feeling tight, and it was even able to remove light makeup (bb cream and mascara), though you’d definitely need to double-cleanse or use a makeup remover first if your makeup is on the heavier side. Yes, it’s natural, 100 per cent active, and perfectly simple, but the thing to really get excited about is that it works. It’s not just a glorified face cleaner like so many before it.
